How to Market Your Business On TikTok.
To win on TikTok, you first need to understand the platform itself. Understand why users use the platform.
TikTok is primarily an entertainment platform.
So don’t bore me with your content and uninspiring product pitches or sound like a news bulletin. Thankfully, the algorithm itself does a great job of filtering out bland content. 😝
After hours of consuming TikTok videos myself, I conclude that there’s three key ways how brands should create content on TikTok.
Make Me Laugh
Entertain me. Crack a joke. Make me feel good! Pick the funniest guy at office and use him to make videos.
This is the primary and the most obvious approach. But does require *some* creative brainstorming and effort to produce.
You can’t play around with your brand posting lame videos can you? 🥴
Tell me a Story
Everyone loves stories! Take me on a journey or narrate an experience.
How many fitness trainers have you seen on TikTok posting videos of nothing but themselves doing dead lifts and flexing their muscles? What value does this content add to his / her audience? 9 out of 10 times, it is ALWAYS the same content. 🙄
There’s no harm in posting this content, but if it’s the only thing you post, chances are high you are just wasting your time. Think engagement.
Instead, talk about what inspired you to first hit the gym. Talk about the first gym you visited when you were 18. Talk about that one-time you got injured and what caused that injury. Talk about that time you were fighting yourself to not procrastinate and skip workouts.
You get the point? Personal experience and story telling = 👌
Teach Me Something
This is what keeps me using TikTok, personally.
Before TikTok, I would binge on YouTube trying to learn stuff but now, TikTok’s become a great source of learning for me in the form of bite-sized edutainment videos.
Be it crypto, marketing tools or how to save the bees!! These short videos that are less than a minute are information packed.
List what you can teach your audience about your products or industry and make videos around them. Walking away knowing I learnt something from “this brand” is a great way to keep remembering that brand.
For instance, if you are into real estate. Yes, you can show me videos of beautiful villas but also teach me more on market trends, the best properties in terms of ROI or how to avoid costly errors when making a purchase!
That’s going to make me trust you more and make me reach out specifically to YOU.
But, heres the most important thing.
You can follow the three approaches above, but if your delivery on the video is poor then your video will suck and will not perform.
You can have a great story to tell but if you narrate it poorly, your video will bore people to death.
At the end of the day, you need to be great at grabbing someone’s attention within the the first 5–7 seconds!
And hey, be authentic. Keep it natural. Shoot stuff from your phone and edit them well. Videos that look shot on a phone (and not studio produced) tend to perform much better.
